He is also the son-in-law of the former Dutch national team manager, Bert van Marwijk. When he played for Bayern Munich he was the club's first non-German captain. During this period, he led the team to two Bundesliga titles, and finished runner-up in the 2010 UEFA Champions League Final. He won the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League with Barcelona and was part of the Netherlands team that finished runner-up of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
